Ronald McDonald Houses

Whitney Bliss
On any given day many of you have probably stopped into McDonald’s to grab some fast food, and noticed the Ronald McDonald House donation box by the cash register.
You may not have put much thought into what these donations go to.
Each year, many families are forced to travel far from their homes to get treatments for their children with cancer or other serious illnesses. The cost of finding a place to stay, sometimes for months, can be frightening and discouraging. Ronald McDonald House gives struggling families an opportunity to have a place to stay with little to no cost while their ill child is receiving medical care. Children are given a much better chance to heal when surrounded by their family in a “home-like” place. This opportunity is only possible through donations and volunteer services.
Donations given to the Ronald McDonald House are not a hoax and surely go to a worthy cause. These houses are a great thing for families enduring hardships. Each house provides playrooms for children, individual kitchen cooking units, recreational activities, and quiet areas to get away from the stress of hospital life. These houses and the caring volunteers within them make a positive impact on families around the country. McDonald charities help around four-million ill children a year. I can speak from personal experience regarding the immense difference the McDonald House makes when a family is in a new city, dealing with a new illness and new hardships every day. It is a place to call home, and a place where any family can feel welcome.
Next time you’re in a McDonald’s, grabbing a bite to eat, and see the little donation box on the counter, you can understand what a difference these boxes make in so many family’s lives.
