National Student Employment Week

The National Student Employment Association (NSEA) has designated April 9-13, 2012 National Student Employment Week. As recognition of student employees is going on among this country’s universities, the importance of student workers is clearly being demonstrated at Montana Tech. Currently, departments across both campuses employ more than 580 student workers. Day after day, their impact on the workings within our institution is experienced, both directly and indirectly, by nearly everyone associated with this university.

Student employment is a true “win-win” situation. It allows the student to utilize many of the technical skills learned in the classroom setting, while at the same time presenting the chance to learn and master other important techniques – often labeled “soft skills.” Recruiters continually state they look for both when interviewing candidates for internships and full-time jobs. Customer service, verbal and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills – for example being a positive member of a team – all are present in a student employment environment.

To recognize these dedicated student employees, the Offices of Student Employment (Montana Tech Career Services, Enrollment Processing and Payroll) have organized a number of events during that designated week:
 • Beginning on Monday, April 9th and running through Thursday, April 12th there will be a table in the Student Union Building Lobby where student employees can enter a drawing by submitting feedback about their jobs. One name will be drawn every day, with a Grand Prize winner receiving a Bookstore Gift Certificate. Notifications will be sent at the end of the week.
• Tuesday, April 10th is the Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY) Reception. Slated for 6:00p.m. in the Copper Lounge, SEOTY nominees and their employers will be recognized during this invitation-only event. This year’s winner will then advance to a regional and national competition.
• What better way to cap off the week that with cake and ice cream? Student employees will enjoy this tasty treat in the Courtyard (between the SUB and S&E) over the lunch hour on Thursday, April 12th.

Each and every one is a sincere THANK YOU for a job well done. Once again, Montana Tech students demonstrate they are IN DEMAND!
