Adjusting to Montana Tech

How can you make your experience at Montana Tech fun and meaningful? Adjusting to college can be difficult at first, but once you get the hang of how everything works, things just seem to fall into place. Attending athletic games (go ‘diggers!), getting involved with activities on campus, and joining clubs are just a few ways to make your experience more rewarding. Some recommendations for first-year college students are:

Be Patient: becoming familiar with campus and adjusting to new found freedom takes time. Tech has many resources available to help you adjust to school, including counseling.

Connect with Other Students: Chances are your peers share similar thoughts and concerns as you do. Talk with your roommate or students in your classes about adjusting to college or invite them to do something fun like join a club or an intramural sport.

Get Involved on Campus: Student clubs and intramural sports are great ways to meet new people and make new friends. Being a part of a team also helps build important interpersonal skills that are necessary for jobs and conflict resolution.

Use Campus Resources: Having a problem adjusting? Use the school’s counselor. Need help studying? Talk to the helpful staff in the library. Have a question about something on campus? Go to the student union building and ask the information desk. Looking for an internship? Utilize Career Services resume and career fair workshops. Looking to recycle? Use the bins located around campus, or the two bins behind the library.

Take Care of Yourself: Eat healthy, get enough sleep, exercise, and maintain positive relationships. All of these things affect your school performance one way or another, so control them in a positive light.

Tech Tip: If you drive to campus be sure to get there at least 10 minutes before your class starts, especially for mid-morning and early afternoon classes. It seems that the campus fills up around these times and it can take a while to find a decent parking spot, the flood of pedestrians around these times can slow things down even more.
