Bob Green, Tech Athletes Named to Butte Sports Hall of Fame

Former Digger gridder Head Coach Bob Green along with former Tech athletes Don Heater, Dan Mahoney, and the 1971 Oredigger Football team were inducted into the Butte, Montana, Sports Hall of Fame under the 2011 Inductee Class.

“He was a longtime successful football coach at Montana Tech. Green led the Orediggers for 24 years from 1987-2010. During that time, the Orediggers had the most successful period in school history. Green compiled a record of 140-116-1. His 1996 club played in the NAIA national championship game. Green's teams finished in the top two in the Frontier Conference in 16 of his 24 seasons. Green also excelled in getting his kids to study hard with 95 percent of his recruits graduating during his time at Montana Tech. He retired from coaching at the Butte college in 2010.”


Don Heater
“He was a standout football player at Montana Tech. Heater was a three-year starter for the Orediggers from 1969-71. During his tenure at the Butte campus, Heater set 14 school records for the Orediggers as a running back. Many of those school records at still in place today 40 years after he last played. Heater led the Orediggers to back-to-back Frontier Conference football titles in 1970 and 1971. During the 1971 season, Heater rushed for 1,797 yards to lead the nation in that category. He was selected as a first team member of the AP Little All-American team following the season. Heater's number 44 is the only football jersey ever retired at Montana Tech. He was drafted in the sixth round of the NFL draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.”


Dan Mahoney
“He was a standout athlete at Butte Central and Montana Tech. Mahoney was a three-year starter in basketball for the Maroons from 1967-69. During that time, Butte Central went 40-12. In football, he was a two-year starter as a linebacker and tight end. Following his prep career, Mahoney played three different sports at Montana Tech, football, basketball and baseball. He was a four-year starting linebacker for the Orediggers. Mahoney was picked first team All-Conference three times and was selected to the Little All-American team in 1972. Mahoney was a member of three Frontier Conference football championship teams.”
