Sure all of us have heard about Civil and Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, English, and all of the other well known and typical majors out there, but have any of us really taken the time to delve into the oddities offered at some schools as a choice of study.
At schools such as Cornell and UC Davis it is possible for one to get a degree in Enology and Viticulture. What is Enology and Viticulture one may ask, well it is the scientific study of the art of winemaking. If you just can't get enough bowling than perhaps Vincennes University in Indiana will pique your interest with a degree in Bowling Industry Management. People from Montana, with their close proximity to our friends from the north may find that offering Canadian Studies as a major is a bit ridiculous, but SUNY Plattsburgh would disagree with you, and backs offering the course of study. If it is just not possible to keep you off of the green, but you play more like a weekend duffer and less like a pro, perhaps you should consider Golf Course Management, an offering from schools such as Penn State, where you will learn valuable skills including turf grass management and analysis of swing. Some of us may have taken it in high school, but did any of us really expect that Home Economics would be a college offering? Well if you attend Idaho State University Home Economics could be your major of choice. We all remember adventure summer camps as kids, and many of us will look toward bungie jumping and white-water rafting as future reliefs from the everyday grind, but where do the people running those camps and adrenaline-junkie business learn their trade? Well some of them may have gone to Green Mountain College in Vermont to major in Adventure Recreation. We all remember the Muppets and other childhood offerings from the late, great Jim Henson, but do any of you know that if you go to the University of Connecticut you could major in Puppetry and be Henson's successor? If puppets really aren't your style though, and you are feeling really Scottish you could choose to attend Carnegie Mellon and major in Bagpipes, yes Bagpipes. If none of the above are your style, and you are more interested in finding our little green friends from space you could always major in Astrobiology from the University of Glamorgan in the UK. Me personally, I'll stick with Metallurgical Engineering and just have people ask me what that is.
