The Orediggers closed out the first half of their season – and Tech’s 2010 Homecoming – with a big victory over Frontier Conference opponent Montana Western of Dillon this past Saturday at the Alumni Coliseum.
The Dawgs struck early in the game but solid play on both sides of the ball for Tech boosted the Diggers to a 36-26 victory. Highlighting the game was a single handed interception by Tech’s Connor O’Neill, a junior inside linebacker, which he then ran back for a Oredigger score.
J.T. McIntyre started off Tech’s offense with a 29 yard reception from quarterback Matt Komac – his first toss of the game. Later in the first quarter, Craig Halko grabbed a 3 yard toss from Komac to put the Orediggers on the board and tie the score at 6 all. Sean Kelly’s kick was good for the extra point and the first Oredigger lead of the game.
The second quarter saw Drew Savage convert an 8 yard pass from Komac to put the Diggers ahead for the second time in the game. Kelly successfully kicked for the extra point. Trent Thomas then ran 15 yards to score and put Tech up once again with a little over 3 minutes left in the half. O’Neill then sparked the Diggers with his 40 yard interception return that put Tech ahead for good.
The third quarter was a deadlock with neither team scoring. However, early in the fourth, Shane Shaules snatched a 32 yard pass from Komac to put another touchdown under the Diggers’ belts. Kelly’s kick was successful for Tech’s final score of the game.
Komac’s passing was a little over 50% for the game going 11-20 and 177 yards. Drew Savage led Tech in rushing with 89 yards. Bryce Worthington, Brandon Boltz, and Shaules all racked up over 40 receiving yards.
Montana Tech is now 4-1 in Frontier Conference play and 4-2 overall with their two losses coming from archrival Carroll College and South Dakota School of Mines.
