ASMT Meeting

Jessica Mazzone
Last Tuesday the ASMT council held another one of their meetings. During the meeting they announced they have found fifth J-Board member. On November 2, 2010 a few of the ASMT council had a conference call with Mass discussing how to get other schools more involved. Next week they will be bringing one student to the Mass meeting to represent Montana Tech for the Lobbyist Position.

Next week on the 17th-19th when a few of the ASMT members go over to Missoula they will not only be attending the Mass meeting on Wednesday night but Thursday and Friday they will be attending the Board of Regents meeting.
Also next week on Thursday November 18th the Instructional Improvement Committee will be sponsoring a discussion panel regarding cheating on campus. This panel is to help the teachers and students be on the same page as to what really qualifies as cheating. There will be four students sitting on the panel to represent the student body. They are also accepting questions from the students to be used as prompts for the panel. If you have any questions regarding this topic or you would like to sign up for the panel you can e-mail them to asmt.president@mtech.edu.
A few of the ASMT board members met with President Engstrom last week to discuss the process that will be used to find a new chancellor. It was said that we will have a new chancellor for Montana Tech by the end of next summer. The ASMT board was also informed that the search committee for this will be finalized by next week and then they will begin the search.
It was also brought to all the members attention that there needs to be a constitutional review. This hasn’t been done since 2007. The committee for this was chosen at the meeting, with Stephanie Sloan in charge of the process. Anything that they think needs to be changed is to be brought to the students attention five days before the senate votes.
There were a couple groups that showed up to the meeting to inform ASMT of how they did at the competitions they recently attended. One group was the Geophysics groups, who attended the SCG Conference. However they did not compete, they wished they did. They attended a few different discussions and the students met with various employers. One of their students landed a job and a few of the other got summer internships. The other group was the Environmental Engineering Team who attended the 2010 Annual Pacific Northwest International Section Conference at The University of Montana. Two of the teams that participated in the Environmental Challenge placed. One of which taking first place, winning a $2,000 cash award plus all-expense paid trip to attend the International Conference in Florida. The second team took third place. There were also three students that placed in the Student Presentation part of the competition: First Place Jennifer Black, Second Place Casey Clark and George Mwaniki. Among other awards there were the Faculty Awards and the Environmental Engineering Alumni Awards.
