Tuesday, October 5, 2010 the Associated Students of Montana Tech held their bi-weekly meeting pertaining to activities and concerns for the students.
The first thing that was brought up in a hurry was the conduct of our students at the Tech vs. Carroll game. Before this meeting the President, Vice President and a select few of the other members met with the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor among a couple other people regarding the activities that took place in Helena. Chancellor Gilmore and the other school officials said, “ The value of your education and what you get is based on the reputation”. The ASMT officers agreed that the behavior was unacceptable, especially when the alumni of Montana Tech are disappointed.
They moved on to talk about the Board of Regents meeting that took place on September 22 and 23. Overall they had a good turn out, but were not impressed with the amount of people that showed up at the mass meeting. This was where Chancellor Gilmore announced his retirement and will be done June 30, 2010. There is no word on when or how they are going to start the search process but it will be soon with it being a nation wide search. The new president and vice president were also announced at the mass meeting. The new president is the ASMT president from Western and the vice president is a girl from Missoula.
At the last meeting they discussed putting more limits on how clubs request funds. This motion was passed at Tuesday’s meeting. It includes that clubs must present their request before their trip or what they need it for. Individuals can make a proposition for their club just as long as it is backing the club and not just the individual. Now that the motion was passed they are going edit for the last time and make everything in it now official.
SPE made a presentation to ASMT requesting funds for a trip they just recently took to Florence, Italy. ASMT made an exception with SPE presenting after the fact because they planned this trip at the end of last year and the trip was at the beginning of this year making it really difficult to present before the fact. SPE described what they did while they were in Italy including: attending informational sessions, competed in the Petro Bowl (a trivia competition) making it to the third round losing to Oklahoma University and visited some historical land marks. This trip helped the club realize what they need to do to reconstruct they way the club does things. Overall they had 17 students go, 5 of which were officers.
ASMT also had Adam Hawks and Frankie Schwartz from SAC to give a short recap of how Homecoming went over. This was the best homecoming within the last eight years. There was a great amount of participation from all the clubs, students, faculty and staff on campus for every event. None of this would have been possible without Krista McBride, director of SAC. They also brought up some of the events that they have planned for students including a hypnotist showing and a trip out to Fairmont for students. Be looking out for some great upcoming events and more student updates.
