The last 24 football seasons, Bob Green has been coaching Montana Tech’s football team to numerous victories, and now it is time for him to move on to better things. Maybe he could do some reality T.V. shows or inspirational talks around the state. Who really knows what he is going to do now? All we do know is one of the most recognizable faces of Montana Tech will be greatly missed.
Coach Green first came to Tech in December of 1986. He was given the opportunity for the head coaching job, yet was unfamiliar with what Tech offered for students. He understood it was an engineering school but that was about it.
The reason Coach Green got into football was “life”. He has participated in football every fall, whether it be playing or coaching. Coach Green has coached at four universities and two high schools. He played at Nebraska as the defensive back and was assistant coach for one year. He was head coach at Minatare Nebraska for four years, and two years at the University of Northern Colorado. Coach Green was the assistant coach for five years at Missouri State University and one year at Broken Bow Nebraska High School. Lastly, he spent 24 great years of coaching here at Montana Tech. Football has always been his dream job. Like everyone else, he had odd jobs here and there, but he has always been involved with football.
“Father Time catches everyone” said Coach Green. After coaching for 37 years, Green said it is the perfect time for him to retire. In his 24 years of coaching at Tech, he brought us 140 victories; in the 78 years before Green was at Tech, we only had 158 victories. The Montana Tech Orediggers have placed second, tied for first and won the Frontier Conference 16 times. Coach Green really improved the football program and changed the culture of football at Tech, and feels that it is the perfect time for a new coach to take over and continue improving the programs.
“Nobody has had more fun at Tech” said Coach Green. Green loves Tech and the Butte community. He plans on staying in this area and working for Tech until his contract is up in June. Other than the time he will be spending with his three kids and four grandkids, he doesn’t have any big plans for retirement.
