For many students starting college, it is the first time they’ve lived on their own. When you live at home, your parents try to teach you how to do your laundry, cook and clean, but when you’re a senior in high school, you don’t care about learning those necessary things you need to survive on your own. Most students end up living off of Top Ramen and Mac & Cheese.
There have been many students and friends of mine that have brought up the fact that having a Home Economics Class would be very beneficial to them. Oddly, it has mostly been guys that have brought this fact to my attention. Yeah, we were once required to take a class almost identical to this in middle school, but when we are that young we could care less about what we were being taught in that class because we never had homework and didn’t have to focus on that class as much as the other “important” classes.
The subjects that some students wish to have taught in these classes include cooking/baking, cleaning, sewing, laundry and many other things you need to know when living on your own. Yes, when living on your own a lot of what you learn is by making mistakes and fixing them. You always have your parents that you can call, but they can only do so much if they don’t live anywhere near you.
Having a class during your freshman year like this would make living on your own a little less stressful. Knowing how to solve some problems that come up at home such as making a healthy meal, doing laundry without running colors together, and even keeping your house clean can help first time freshman to relieve some stress. So maybe if multiple students make the suggestion, we might just be able to get a class like this going.
What about a "Singles Survival Club" a class seems like overkill for basic life skills. I bet there are Non-Traditional students that could share with the less informed and make a party out of the meetings. The nightly hosts have to cook for the others, eat and share the things you know with those that need to know.
