Got a Need For Speed?

By: Alan Barthelmess
Hope everyone had a great Christmas break, I know I sure did. One gift I received was Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, an intense racing title that has multiple race modes instead of just your standard race. One of the most popular races modes that kicked off this series is in the title “hot pursuit”. Hot pursuit is a race mode where players will play as either racers trying finish and win the race or cops that are trying to shut the race down.

Up to eight players can participate in this mode, four racers and four cops. Each player is working player is working together while also competing against each other, how’s that for a complication. If one racer crosses the finish line then the racers win and each racer will earn five thousand experience, however the racer who finishes first will earn an extra two thousand experience. If the cops are able to shut down the race then the cops will each earn five thousand experience and an additional two thousand for each racer they are able to bust during the race.
The fun really unwraps with all the abilities you receive as a racer and as a cop. As the racer you will be able to use one turbo boost (note that nitrous and turbo are different), two spike strips, two e.m.p. shots, and one equipment jamming signal. The cops get the real firepower however. With a helicopter that drops spike strips, a couple of road blocks, e.m.p shots, and of course a few spike strips. When you play as the cops also it is a good idea to work together more because unlike the racers your goal isn’t to cross a finish line. It is to stop all the racers from crossing the finish line.
Most racing games allow the racer to choose any car they want for a race and everyone will always choose the one with the best specs, making the diversity of the cars pointless. Not in Need For Speed Hot Pursuit however! In this racing game the racing modes are split up into five categories starting with sports and ending with hyper. In each of the categories a list of cars that you unlock as you play can be selected and all of these cars have similar specs making them ideal for racing each other. In the first category you’ll find cars like the Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Lancer Evolution, Nissan 370Z, and Dodge charger are a few to name. All the way up to hyper where you can use the Bugatti Veyron 16-4. In that category you’ll be passing 200mph in seconds.
Even if you choose not to go online and verse people all your times and scores from single player will be posted on your wall and ranked against your friends. This game is by far the best racing game I have played in a long time and I highly recommend it to anyone who is not a typical racing game fan, and wants a little more than just being the first to cross the finish line out of a racing game. Overall the game is lots of fun and the cars look great.
