This last Friday a concert was held in the Digger Den. The concert consisted of three local bands.
The first band, Tomato Soup, consisted of a one-man band playing piano and singing. It had a highly lounge music quality to it. The vocals were decent, melodically matching the piano playing and not too pitchy. The one drawback was the snare of one of the other bands' drum kits vibrating quite loudly to the sound of the piano playing.
The second band, 4 the Record, brought in a huge Butte High crowd. There was a whole trove of Butte High kids that came up to Tech specifically to watch them. Their music was in the rock/screamo category. They were decent instrumentally, but their vocals were lacking in comparison. Their original music sounded quite a bit better than the cover songs they played. The band's "clean" vocals were a bit pitchy and could definitely use improvement. Also they could do with fewer attempts to cover a song in their own personal style and more original work in the future. The Butte High crowd really seemed to love it though; emo/screamo-like attempts to mosh broke out through the set. The circle of thrashing kids almost destroyed band equipment on multiple occasions.
The final band of the evening, Head Like This, was a decently talented cover band. Attempting to stay as true to the original songs as possible was a success for them. Their cover of "Glycerine" took me back; I hadn't heard that song in forever, but I think they did a really good job of covering the recognizable Bush single.
Overall, I would say the concert in the Digger Den wasn't the worst way to spend a few hours on a Friday night.
