In every classroom presentation, I talk about all of the various services offered in Career Services. In addition, I tell students the career fairs at Montana Tech are the most public display of OUR MISSION. We try to get the word out through emails, flyers, press releases, workshops, presentations, emails, television, newspapers, etc. There are now two of them, one each semester; this provides a great opportunity to meet with employers who are physically here to hire students for summer, internships, and full-time positions in a variety of industries.
It is easy to think these events don’t offer something for everyone, but there are valuable take-a-ways for you by talking to recruiters in various industries at these events. Besides career exploration, people who hire can give you valuable information about how to best present yourself to employer, what skills are sought by their company (above and beyond the technical skills), and for some students it can be a worthwhile moment to learn how to become comfortable with talking about yourself to HR professionals, emphasizing your strengths and skills.
Montana Tech has some academic programs which are not offered at very many colleges in the nation. Some of these programs have a long history of producing well-educated and hard-working students. Other programs have fewer students and haven’t yet developed the tradition or established a strong employer base. Career Services is working with departments to help connect students with employers who hire for these majors.
Take control of your career planning and check out some of the many resources provided by Career Services. Besides the on-campus events, fairs and recruiting, there are a number of additional services to help you become the best candidate for the job you want! The first step is best said with my favorite quote:
“The indispensable first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: Decide what you want.”
- Ben Stein
It is hard to get somewhere if you don’t know where you are going. Career Services provides many opportunities for students, to help you get there; wherever ‘there’ is for you. Please check out what is available either in-person or online (www.mtech.edu/career/students). If there is something you need, please let us know.
Near the end of the 3rd annual CareerSMART Fair last Wednesday, I was talking to a student who reminded me of something I had as a mantra several years ago as Chair of a Leadership Program. I am sure someone more important than me has already said, “You get out of it, what you put into it.” No one can tell you what your “it” is, but there are several resources that you can use, now as a student or in the future as a recent grad or alumnus. Remember, Get Into It!
